The post quickly received tons of comments – both requests for clarifications of the clarification and outcries from customers thinking this rule is unfair.ĭreamHost insists that the policies have not been changes, and that this rule has always existed, but I think it’s easy to see why people are confused. The main concern is apparently that DreamHost’s servers are being filled with rsync backups of entire hard drives, copies of DVD rips, music collection, etc., even when the Terms of Service prohibits this kind of use. They emphasized that files uploaded to your account should be provided with the intent of distributing them to others from your hosted sites. If you want to share with colleagues or external organisations, then you will need an alternative.Three days ago DreamHost posted a clarification regarding their policies on the use of their services for personal storage and backup purposes. Lastly, Mozy Sync is clearly not a file sharing application, thus if all you need is basic sync of files across your own devices, then it will do the job. #Mozypro support forum passwordFor me, the password risk becomes harder to manage as your business gets more users, thus consider this risk carefully. While files where you keep the encryption key will not be exposed, access to your online account can still enable malicious activities. Mozy does not enforce password strength, and does not support two factor authentication, and thus leaves you vulnerable to password hacking. If you decide to use Mozy for backup, make sure your users define strong passwords. This constraint does not apply to Windows based file storage, as Mozy provides a Windows server client to enable autonomous backup. I’d actively avoid creating such a dependency, and really, if you buy a NAS you should also select an integrated backup solution at the same time. Rather you need to configure NAS backups from a remote computer, in turn, if that remote computer is not available, backups wont happen. If your business uses a non-Windows based Network Attached Storage (NAS) device for file storage, then I would recommend against using Mozy for backup as there are no options to run the backup client directly on the NAS. #Mozypro support forum fullIf however, your business can survive by selectively restoring critical files, while waiting a 3 – 5 days for the full restore (using the Mozy DVD service) then Mozy will do the job. If you need to rapidly restore ALL data in the event of complete data loss (less than 1 day), then Mozy backup, and indeed any online backup service, is not going to be suitable (the onsite alternatives are a topic for another post). So what is my recommendation for others considering Mozy Pro?Īssuming your business has at least a few hundred GB of data, my recommendation for using Mozy backup really depends on how quickly you need to restore your data. #Mozypro support forum macRather, you need to have the client on a Windows or Mac and then map to the network attached storage. * Perhaps not a con, but something to be aware of, you cannot autonomously backup a non Windows storage device. * Perhaps not a con, but something to be aware of, your backup up data is not replicated across Mozy data centers, it is stored in one data center only. * Mozy does not publish a guaranteed service availability. The 2xProtect option enables rapid restores for the most recent backup, however this will not be helpful if attempting to recover from a data corruption issue that spread to the last backups. * Even when using the restore by DVD, the restore process will take days not hours. * Mozy Sync does not have any features to enable file sharing with colleagues. #Mozypro support forum pro* No password policy on Mozy Pro for businesses with less than 200 users. * There is no two factor authentication to provide additional security to online administrator authentication. * Mozy provides the 2xProtect option to allow local backups, in addition to online, to assist if you need to restore data quickly (only the most recent backup is available locally, historical backups are available online only) #Mozypro support forum download* Mozy provides a restore by DVD service for large data restores that cannot wait for Internet download (delivery time is 3 – 5 days). * The Mozy Data Shuttle provides a pragmatic method to achieve a first backup when your Internet connection will not suffice. * The entire Mozy business has successfully completed a SOC 1 SSAE 16 Type 2 audit which is a significant accomplishment. * Files are encrypted when stored at Mozy facilities, and you can chose to keep your encryption key, which means Mozy has no access to your files. I explain fully in a blog post,, but below are the key points. I've reached the conclusion that Mozy Pro may be suitable for businesses without rapid restore requirements, but you will need to compensate for poor password controls, and Mozy Sync will meet only the most basic of needs. I've been evaluating Mozy for business use over the last month. ![]()
